My first words to her were .. if you run I will bury this quiva so deep in your spine you will never move your legs again .. and then just because ... I will open your body to the Sky .. I will peel away your ribs and your final breaths will cause your lungs to flutter in the air like a herlit's wings .. free for just those few moments before you die.
I was rather impressed with myself .. that was a lot of threat for just waking up .. cheered me up and made me feel better and more like myself.
Not that I would ever waste that kind of death on a mere girl .. but she did not know that and her eyes widened as she registered the details of it and I nodded.
My next words were directives .. sharp and with very little room for argument. She shook herself and did as I bid .. I just was too tired to tell her why she should obey and I will say this .. she had enough self preservation to know I was serious. I was not sure what all happened behind her with the Vaci .. but knowing the Vaci it was nothing pretty. She did not seem to be intent on leaving me either .. I suppose the unknown fate with me was better than what she knew of the Vaci at this point.
I had her tear most of her dress apart and I shoved a chunk of it into my shoulder as I pulled the Vaci blade out. Then wrapped it and tied it tight .. with her help. Another piece on my arm and by now the sluggish leaking of my head had stopped and tying any bandage around my swollen forehead just did not appeal to me. I was tired but .. getting caught out in the cold all night with my loss of blood was not a good idea .. so no better time than the present to get moving. Life was out there somewhere .. not here. Here there was only death .. there was only left to move.
How apropos .. a Tuchuk having to move to stay alive. Amused the hell out of me. But I did not laugh .. had to save my strength.
I hefted my saddle up on my shoulder with an exhale of pain that whistled passed my teeth .. and just struck out in the direction of the herd and the camp. I did not bid her to follow but I heard her small step following me .. and I smirked. I could hear her pause sometimes .. probably looking around or behind ... then a double step to catch back up.
I will call her Catch.
I am not sure what all she was thinking or feeling. And I did not have the energy to try and figure it out. A more motley set of people striking out across the grass I doubt has ever been spotted on the plains.
Another amusing thought.
Either this situation was full of amusing things or I was still a little punch-drunk.
Outriders .. Tuchuk outriders. Another lucky break. Seemed the Sky was just not ready to welcome me yet.
huh
They threw the girl over a saddle and I rode behind one of the warriors. I was in and out of consciousness the entire way .. pulled it together enough to shove the girl inside my wagon .. Yaz would keep her there. I had something I had to do still before I allowed myself the luxury of sleep.
